Asmara is not like other African cities. It’s wide boulevards, clean streets and faded Italian style buildings hint at the city’s envisioned position as the Piccola Roma of Italian ruled East Africa. That day never came. Today Asmara’s political and geographic isolation give the whole city an aire of faded grandeur far removed from the rampant development affecting many African cities.
